A History of the Dental Clinic
In 1986, Rev. Bobby Bowman, a baptist missionary from Arkansas founded the small medical facility that would eventually become Hospital Socorro de lo Alto. The hospital, since 2003, has provided medical and surgical care to thousands of people from all across Honduras.
In 2011 construction and equipping of a dental clinic at the hospital began, relying on donations of used dental equipment from many different individuals and organizations. The dental clinic was completed in 2012, and in early 2013 the first dental mission team arrived for a week of service. Since then there has been a dental team each year, as well as semi-regular service provided by Dr. Oscar Espinoza, a Honduran dentist from La Entrada some 30 miles away who gives of his time and talent to do dental mission work in his own country. It is his way of giving back to others. We also have a team of dentists who come annually and perform “on site” dental care in the tiny villages in the surrounding mountains. This mountain mission dentistry reaches many who would otherwise be unlikely to ever receive dental care!
